Many leaders experience a difference between where they stand today and where they want to grow. We call this difference the ambition gap, and it forms the starting point for development.
During a survey of business leaders and professionals, a number of key insights regarding leadership emerged.
The ambition gap as a starting point
Every leader asks themselves the same question sooner or later:
Where do I stand today, and where do I want to go?
The distance between those two determines your direction of development. Important insight: the ambition to grow is widely present. The challenge lies not so much in motivation, but in focus and execution.
Where is the greatest need for development?
Interestingly enough, the greatest demand for growth lies not at the strategic level, but in organizing.
This concerns:
- create clear frameworks
- make roles and responsibilities explicit
- bringing structure to teams and processes
When this is missing, uncertainty and delays quickly arise.
The real challenge: communication and feedback
In addition to structure, one theme recurs regularly: communication and feedback.
In practice, this means:
- expectations are not always made explicit
- messages are not repeated sufficiently
- Giving feedback remains nerve-wracking for many leaders.
Effective leadership calls for consistency here: being clear, repeating, and engaging in the conversation, even when the subject is difficult.
From insight to action
Three targeted development directions:
- Create clarity in organization and roles
- Communicate explicitly and consistently
- Make feedback a permanent part of your leadership
