ONLINE: High quality & effective collaboration

The focus of this session was not on the collaboration tools themselves but on the behavior and attitude of the users. We gained insights on the ‘world of work’ and the fact that people want to become successful, their will to grow and to become happy at work…

Not that easy if you know that <20% of the workforce is engaged and burn-out figures rapidly increase while everybody is looking for authenticity.

Visual

In all organisations teams are at the center of their activities. It is through the teams we obtain the company objectives. Moreover, every team has common objectives and the team members need each other to realize them.

Referring to the ‘Project Aristotle’ (Google) we get to learn that the most important element in building a perfect team is ‘psychological safety’. In other words: a team is a place where I dare taking risks and can put me vulnerable. It is a place that is safe enough to take interpersonal risks.

Psychological Safety

4 stages of psychological safety

There are 4 stages of psychological safety:

  • Inclusion safety = giving people the integral and honest access to a group
  • Learner safety = providing people the safety to learn
  • Contributor safety = allow people to contribute
  • Challenger safety = give room to challenge status quo, vision,…

We started the session with a poll in which these 4 statements are measured.
And the results showed:

Challenger Safety
Contributor Safety
Inclusion Safety
Learner Safety

Pixar

Pixar with the movy ‘toy story’ of 1995  or ‘finding nemo’ and many others are a good example of the methodology. They produce award winning digital movies. How did they do this? This 4 stages model has been embedded in their operations.

Their co-founder, Ed Catmull, used to say: “Failure is a major learning opportunity. Turn pain into progress. To be wrong as fast as you can is to sign up for aggressive, rapid learning”.

Take aways for you

The session ended with 4 tips to strengthen psychological safety in your team

  • Start team meetings with a check-in (inclusion safety)
  • Rolemodel asking questions and sharing mistakes (learner safety)
  • Organize brainstorm and co-creation sessions (contributor safety)
  • Actively invite objections when presenting a proposal (challenger safety)

We definitely learned a lot and moreover, we can start using the tips as of tomorrow!
