The thought of going to a networking event is a real nightmare for a lot of people. Even the idea of being in a room full of strangers, having to step out of their comfort zone and talking to an unknown is enough to make them sweat.

So we invited Filip Verstraete from BDO to share his 25 tips and tricks for effective networking.

Be prepared

Success of networking comes from the preparation, so here are some great tips to start with

  • Define what networks to prepare and why
  • Focus on events with peers and equals as part of your target audience
  • Prepare yourself before you got a network meeting
  • Dress for success

Time to go!

Time to go the networking meeting and to remember these tips

  • Bring plenty of business cards
  • Arrive early
  • Position yourself at the entrance to see everyone entering
  • Plan your escape routes for when you need them
  • Put on that smile
  • Read up on current affairs to have some conversation starters

Some tips ..

Here are some golden rules when you are going to network

  • Stay away from large groups
  • Stay away from co-workers
  • Keep people you know till last
  • Do not gossip
  • Drink with your left hand

.. and tricks

Now you are ready to network

  • Give everyone a hand
  • Keep your distance
  • Use your introduction or references to get the conversation started
  • Ask quickly for a business card
  • Write some words on the business for follow up purposes
  • Don’t get the drinks so you can continue to have those conversations
  • Don’t forget to have fun

After the event

After you had a successful networking event, it is time to keep the momentum going.

  • Follow up quickly
  • Build a database
  • Use social medio to follow up

A final thought

Focus on meaningful connections when networking. Through the conversation identify people you naturally connect with and who represent for your ideal customer, prospect or contact.

It is better to have one single meaningful connection that is valuable than a number of insignificant connections you never quite feel comfortable following up with down the road anyway.
