Lessons learned about lessons learned

During the first discussion session of the Project Management track, we wanted to check with the participants whether companies review “lessons learned” internally and if so, how they do it. Do they somehow record the conclusions on the approach of a project, when do they do it, how, and so on. In particular, do they look back at these things when starting a new project?

After a short real-life testimony from De Lijn and Electrabel (see the presentations on the extranet or in the member-only section), the discussions continued in the interactive form of “World Café”*, with the central question being: “How do you get added value from lessons learned?”
During the three conversational rounds (with the participants changing tables each time), people discussed, noted, drew pictures and, in particular, exchanged concrete information about their own experiences.

You can find the conclusions of these interesting discussions in the document “Lessons learned about lessons learned”.

*World Café in a nutshell

The World Café is a series of conversations around a theme or issue. Each table of four to five people has its own question (which may be the same or different each time) and this is discussed in 20-minute conversational rounds. The participants write down their conversation on a “writeable” tablecloth as a spider diagram, a cartoon or in a number of quotes. The conversation is stopped at a suitable moment. One participant stays behind (the table host or hostess) and the other participants each look for a different table. Every conversation at the table begins with a review of the previous conversation, which is based on studying the notes on the tablecloth and additional information from the table host or hostess. This allows the new group to go deeper into the issue in their own conversation. At the end, you make a summary of all the conversations.
